About

The Department of Commerce was established in 1978, with the aim of imparting quality education in the field of commerce. Since its inception, the department has grown in both academic strength and student intake, earning a distinguished reputation for excellence in teaching, research and extension activities. In 1982, the department expanded its academic offerings by introducing the Master of Commerce (M.Com.) programme, providing students with advanced knowledge in accounting, finance etc.,. With an emphasis on academic rigour and practical application, the M.Com. programme has produced numerous graduates who have excelled in various fields including academia, industry and public service. Recognizing the department’s consistent academic performance and research potential, it was elevated to the status of a Research Department in 2010, with the introduction of the M.Phil. in the Commerce programme. Since then, the research department has spread its wings, expanding its scholarly activities and establishing a robust research culture. More than 130 M.Phil. scholars have successfully completed their degrees under the able guidance of experienced and dedicated faculty members, contributing significantly to the advancement of knowledge in the field of commerce.

The department further marked a significant milestone by offering Part-Time Ph.D. programmes, through which 25 Ph.D. scholars have completed their doctoral degrees. In 2022, the department was officially recognized and upgraded as a Full-Time Research Department in Commerce, approved by the University of Madras. This development has opened doors for aspiring researchers and scholars to pursue high quality research in a full time capacity. At present, more than 25 research scholars are actively pursuing their Ph.D. degrees in Commerce. The department takes immense pride in its academically eminent faculty, all of whom are doctorate holders and prolific contributors to scholarly publications, National and International Conferences and other academic assignments. The department remains intellectually vibrant through the consistent organization of National and International Seminars, Workshops, Guest lectures, colloquia, Faculty Development Programme ensuring an immersive learning environment attuned to contemporary global trends. Being the Research department, the curriculum involves intensive study, Internship, Research Based dissertations to imbibe excellence and strong social linkages with many corporates for its academic development.

Mission

The department provides holistic knowledge in commercial, technical and social areas through dynamic and inclusive learning. By fostering practical skills, soft skills and research aptitude the department bridges the gap between academia and industry. It aims to empower the students from all backgrounds with knowledge and professional competence to enable them to contribute to society.

Objectives

       To provide ample exposure to courses from the fields of Commerce, Accountancy and Management.

       To equip the students for entry level jobs in industry, that promotes the growth of their professional career, entrepreneurship and a key contribution to the economic development of the country.

       To encompass advancements in the fields of finance, marketing, management, accounting, law, taxation, entrepreneurship, organisational behaviour, computer applications, research, operation research etc.,

       To equip students with in-depth knowledge and skills required to cope with the dynamics of the constantly changing business environment and technological upgrades.

       To enhance the learner’s acumen, logical and analytical thinking through mandatory internships and research projects which facilitates them to become job providers.
